I had been clear from the beginning ... that I thought no serious advance in moral thought concerning homosexuality could occur without dialogue with those who are living out that orientation and experiencing what the Holy Spirit says to them through their experience. To this day, it seems to me that the essential difference between the Vatican and me has to do with their distrust in the ability of the Holy Spirit to guide human conscience from within.
